I was going through some of my files and came across a tribute I wrote for my sons approximately three years ago. They came to visit me one day and S.A.T. was extremely upset. He said his father called drunk in the middle of the night and told S.A.T. he was nothing but a loser, that he would amount to nothing, and that he needed to get a real job even with my son making more money in a two-night weekend as a DJ than many people make in a week. He was constantly verbally attacking my sons' especially when either one of them did something that was good. I could feel the pain my son was feeling while he was talking. I could also see he was attempting to hold back tears. I know what he went through and was going through as I have also been the recipient of their father's 'knife-twisting' alcohol-induced rages.
My son's self-esteem was damaged and I needed to find a way to turn it around just like it was when his father refused to attend S.A.T.'s high school National Honor Society Induction ceremony, the most important thing he had ever achieved so far at that time in his young life of 17 years. I wrote this piece so both of them could see what they have accomplished as musicians and attempt to repair the emotional damage. I've added a few more things to it since the initial writing as they have accomplished even more. Over the entire course of the three-day visit, I continued to tell them they were winners and by the time they left, I felt I had succeeded in restoring S.A.T.'s self-esteem back to normal. After this was when "Maniac Agenda" was born and they are now starting to see the fruits of all of their hard work and I mean hard work. They have had to do without all kinds of things including proper nutrition because of wanting to make a living in the world they love. Thank goodness I was able to see my sons before the self-esteem damage took root.
I never thought my sons would go as far as they have with their music. As a matter of fact, I was quite surprised to hear the level of skill they acquired after hearing their "ICHI" remix done and their "Come Back Clean" remix which just blew me away. I thought they would just spend a few years in it while they had the opportunity to and move on into another career. They took it a step further, though, and decided to do without in order to try to succeed.
'DMF' and I had a conversation one night about their plans. He told me most people in their business are not willing to sacrifice or go the distance in order to succeed. He expected that it would take approximately five years before they would start to see anything from their work and he was right. It has gone in some different directions than what he originally told me, but still it is all good. They have truly earned their place in their world and to write the above tribute was worth it. When they are feeling down, all they have to do is read my tribute to them to bring their spirits back up. Their accomplishments are exceptional when so many people in their personal lives were against them and continuously telling them to get a 'real job' and I was the only one who supported their decision and encouraged them even when I wasn't sure they would succeed.
Excellent work, sons, excellent work!!
