Has anyone else noticed the time, effort, research, and thought Grisham puts into his work in Newsvine? I have spent a lot of time in his column and wish to continue because of the educational value, humor, diversity and quality of his writings along with the intelligence of many of the comments and debates from other viners. I can also keep abreast of politics without the in-your-face political commenting atmosphere that straight-up political articles tend to have.
If there have been trolls, most of the time I wouldn't have recognized them as their comments seem to fit into the discussions. Yes, things do get off-topic from time to time, but it usually adds to the commenting and sometimes adds humor. AND....there are so many different viners with all types of personalities that visit Grisham's articles. Discussions and debates can get heated at times, but you know what? Most of the time, it really is OK. I have learned quite a bit from those heated arguments and, meaning no disrespect to any viners whatsoever, those heated arguments can be funny as hell.
To have the spontaneous diversity of commenting in Grisham's column disappear because of the possibility of the limited number of nations you can belong to in the new Newsvine or making it mandatory that an article be posted to a Nation (which, in itself, will cut down on the spontaneity and continuity of commenting from many different viners), is nothing but a shame and what a loss. If it wasn't for his column, I wouldn't have stayed around to find other good parts of Newsvine. I left Newsvine twice after my first two attempts at commenting – one was in MSN, the other was in a column that was pro-Christianity. The third time I found myself back into Newsvine, I found my niche – Grisham’s world and those viners like him and will never go back to MSN or that particular pro-Christianity column again(not the one which most would assume it is).
IMO, there should be continuity in commenting in the opinion-controversial-topic type articles Grisham writes and, I think, it might be too difficult to follow and lose their impact if some comments are in a Nation and some are in the trough. Opinion-type articles on controversial subjects are different than verse, conversational, object, or even religious type articles and, at least much of the time in Grisham’s column, I see another aspect to commenting –rational opinion.
Does Newsvine really want the ability to have continuity to comment on this author's work to be in a Nation only? He is a positive asset, sets a good example on how to research, write, and cite within an article giving all sides of an argument, if possible, and how commenting should work. As a matter of fact, many times he doesn't even have to do much moderating as we just get in there and hash it out. As far as I am concerned, he belongs up there with the other RAV winners and is an excellent front door or gateway to any version of Newsvine.
I believe he has more than earned the Random Act of Vineness (RAV) for his literary accomplishments, his unbiased acceptance of others, his soft-style marketing skills, his willingness to 'listen' to other viewpoints along with allowing viners to get into intense debates without undue CoH censure, and his ability to comment to viners on a personalized level.
I have seen more comments around the Vine praising Grisham’s work and have only used a few. If those whose comments I used object to it, please email me and I will remove them. Thanks for reading my thoughts on why I think Grisham should receive the RAV. I hope others who feel the same will add their voice to this article. Enjoy!
